“Chasing Sunrise” Rocky Mountain National Park Archival Quality Reproduction of Original Painting

Colorado. August 14, 2019. Keyhole Trailhead by 3:30. When you hike in the dark and dont have the pleasure of being distracted by the beauty of nature, unfortunately you start to think about how heavy your backpack is and how much your feet hurt. But still we pressed on. After emerging from the switchbacks in the forest, my breath was taken away by the sheer amount of stars in the sky, including the Pleiades star cluster, which looked like something you’d only see via telescope to this Ohio gal. A few miles and water breaks later, we reached our first major checkpoint, Chasm Lake (which would be below and behind me, not pictured in this painting). The sun was breaking dawn over the Twin Sister Peaks, and we were in total awe and wonder at the peachy pink alpenglow illuminating Longs Peak and “The Diamond” behind us with warmth and serenity. That’s when my husband snapped this photo that later would become this self portrait. I can still feel this moment, and I don’t think I’ve experienced this same feeling since. Summiting Longs Peak later that day will be a memory I never forget.
